IN The Dark includes James MacMillan's stunning Miserere and specially commissioned works by Richard Bates, Platinum's composer in residence. These contemporary works are juxtaposed -- yet inextricably linked -- with choral music by Lassus, Victoria, Purcell and Lotti. The title work, Bates' In The Dark, encapsulates The poignancy of Holy Week, with a new setting of The Tudor poem 'You that have spent The silent night' by George Gascoigne (1525-1577).

TEXT:
One Dark night,
fired with love’s urgent longings
—ah, The sheer grace!—
I went out unseen,
my house being now all stilled.
In Darkness, and secure,
by The secret ladder, disguised,
—ah, The sheer grace!—
in Darkness and concealment,
my house being now all stilled.
On that glad night, in secret,
for no one saw me,
nor did I look at anything,
with no oTher light or guide
than The one that burned in my heart.
- St. John of The Cross (1542-1592)
ABOUT The WORK:
“Dark Night of The Soul was written in 2010, and premiered that year by The Phoenix Chorale. The text, three stanzas from St. John of The Cross’ magical poem Dark Night of The Soul, was suggested to me by Joel Rinsema, Executive Director of The Phoenix Chorale, and I fell in love with its passio... less

We rehearse Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:30. This is an auditioned group with considerable musical and choral experience, one that aspires to a higher standard of performance. Our members include amateur and professional musicians, choir directors and music educators. Prospective members may audition from time to time as positions come open. Contact The choir if you have an interest in joining.
We perform mostly a cappella pieces, but many of our concerts include accompaniment by members of The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra and organ. less
