Colloque Sentimental - (translation by S N Solomons after Paul Verlaine)
In the age-old park, treading the icy grass
Two lone forms ere a while went past.
Their eyes are dead, their lips are soft and moist,
Almost inaudible their voice.
In the cold lonely park, pacing the grass,
Twin lonely spectres have evoked the past.
"Dost thou recall our ecstasy of old?"
"Why would you think I should recall?"
"And at my name does thy heart pulse and grow?
And in thy dreams seest thou my soul?" "No!"
"Those lovely days of unheard bliss and free ...
We fused our lips as one!" "Ah, that might be."
"How blue the heavens and our hope how high!"
"Hope has fled vanquished to the sombre sky."
And so they wandered in the unkempt grass,
And night alone heard all the words that passed. less

This song can be understood on two levels.
At first sight it is a simple Sentimental piece,
but beneath it lies a history of pure imagination,
enchantment and impossibility.
The composer already realises he is
no longer feeling what he is writing,
he is just weaving a spell,
over an ostinato guitar motif,
to try to bring the feelings back
(hence the title "Incantation").
He has found in his life that
whenever he writes a song
for the object of his desire,
he has already
begun to stop feeling that desire ...
it is a sign that the relationship
is about to change
or disappear.
But the whole thing is indeed
enchantment and magic:
you can dream and
you can take the song at face value
if you wish.

Two much-loved hymns from yesteryear, Whispering Hope and Wonderful Peace of Jesus, shine again in this Sentimental tribute to the hope and peace we have in Jesus. For years these two songs of the faith have been favorites for funerals and memorial services, and this arrangement adorns these expressive old hymns with warm harmonies and a flowing piano part.
