Owing much to the polyphonic work of the Renaissance, the motet is a deeply-felt work written during Wesley's period of recuperation from a fall whilst out fishing in the North Yorkshire countryside at Helmsley. The chromatic clashes at the words "the bones which Thou hast broken" are almost certainly reflective of the pain the composer had suffered, for his leg was badly broken and he walked ever after with a noticeable limp.
This performance was recorded in Leeds Minster on Sunday 28th April 2013 during the recital of 'Music with Minster connections' sung by St Peter's Singers of Leeds, directed by Dr Simon Lindley.
Leeds Minster, formerly Leeds Parish Church, has a long and distinguished musical history. The list of organists and past organists of the Parish Church of St Peter-at-Leeds is outstanding. 'Music with Minster connections' celebrated both this heritage and the status of Leed... less

Psalm 51, Verse 7 [Antiphon at the Sprinkling of Holy Water]
Thou shalt purge me, O Lord, with hyssop and I shall be clean:Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen
Book of Common Prayer, Psalm 51, Verse
The rite of sprinkling the faithful with holy water at the start of the Medieval mass in every Sunday of the Church’s Year except for Palm Sunday and in Eastertide involved the use of verse seven from the famous Miserere text, the 51st Psalm. Palestrina’s four part setting involves the sustained motto theme of the traditional plainchant melody within the... less

Emendemus in melius
Emendemus in melius quae ignoranter peccavimus; ne subito praeoccupati die mortis, quaeramus spatium poenitentiae, et invenire non possimus. Attende, Domine, et miserere; quia peccavimus tibi.
Baruch, Chapter 3, Verse 2
Versus:Adjuva nos, Deus salutaris noster, et propter honorem[gloriam] nominis tui libera nos.
Psalm 78, Verse 9a
Let us amend for the better in those things in which we have sinned through ignorance;
lest suddenly overtaken by the day of death, we seek space for repentance, and be not able to find it. Hearken, O Lord, and have mercy: for we have sinned against thee.
Verse:Help us, O God of our salvation, and for the honour [glory] of thy name deliver us.
Psalm, 78, Verse 9a

We're planning to perform and record a programme of modern sacred music in the fabulous space and acoustic that is Leeds' Victoria Quarter. We are appealing to as many people as possible to participate in the project by giving whatever they would like, in return for a reward or perk. "Bring us, O Lord God, at our last awakening, into the house and gate of heaven, to enter into that gate and dwell in that house, where there shall be no darkness nor dazzling, but one equal light; no noise nor silence but one equal music; no fears nor hopes but one equal possession; no ends nor beginnings but one equal eternity; in the habitations of thy Glory and Dominion, world without end. Amen."
John Donne (1572-1631)
