Psalm 51, Verse 7 [Antiphon at the Sprinkling of Holy Water]
Thou shalt purge me, O Lord, with hyssop and I shall be clean:Thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost:As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen
Book of Common Prayer, Psalm 51, Verse
The rite of sprinkling the faithful with holy water at the start of the Medieval mass in every Sunday of the Church’s Year except for Palm Sunday and in Eastertide involved the use of verse seven from the famous Miserere text, the 51st Psalm. Palestrina’s four part setting involves the sustained motto theme of the traditional plainchant melody within the tenor line. As customary, this setting alternates chant with harmony and the complete Gloria is followed by a reprise of the harmonised material – the work unfolds from an intoned line comprising the first two words of the chant following which the full choir takes over.
This performance was recorded at the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels, Thornhill, West Yorkshire, as part of the Singers' recital of Passiontide Polyphony and organ solos given on Sunday 2nd April 2017. Dr Simon Lindley, the choir's Music Director since its foundation in 1977, directed and also played the organ solos.
