The song is there described as "a comic song" written and composed by James Yorkston (of Scotland) and arranged by Edmund Forman. Because it is noted as printed with permission of an Edinburgh firm, there was clearly an earlier version. Although the song is the unofficial anthem of Dublin and generally regarded as Irish, it was, in fact, written by a Scotsman. This outdoor performance was the culmination of a six-week project which creates a choir from scratch for one night only. Each winter and summer, Chris Rowbury gathers a random bunch of singers from in and around Ipswich. There are no auditions and all songs are taught and learnt by ear. In October 2012, the choir was awarded the prestigious title of Choir of the Year 2012, after an extensive UK-wide search and a competitive Grand Final held at London's Royal Festival Hall. The ensemble was established in 2007 by present musical director Andrew Nunn and performs regularly across Scotland and beyond, having given concerts in renowned venues such as Glasgow Cathedral, the SECC, Dunkeld Cathedral, Paisley Abbey, the Mackintosh Church, the Queen's Hall, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and London’s Cadogan Hall. The choir has also performed in more obscure locations, having “sung on the subway” as part of the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) promotion of the Glasgow underground.
