This well-known setting by Tomas Luis de victoria (1548-1611) of Popule meus, the lengthy series of chants known as Improperia, or Reproaches, which occur at the liturgical climax of Good Friday, during the special service of the Adoration of the Cross, w...  moreThis well-known setting by Tomas Luis de victoria (1548-1611) of Popule meus, the lengthy series of chants known as Improperia, or Reproaches, which occur at the liturgical climax of Good Friday, during the special service of the Adoration of the Cross, was recorded on Saturday 2nd April 2011 during St Peter's Singers' recital of sacred polyphony for Passiontide and Tenebrae in the beautiful surroundings and acoustic of St Aidan's Parish Church in Leeds. The Singers are directed by Dr Simon Lindley, Music Director since the choir's foundation in 1977. The plainchant verses are sung by soprano Sarah Kelly, and the solo quartet (positioned remotely from the main choir) comprises soprano Julie Kilburn, alto Lucy Appleyard, tenor Jonathan Morrish and bass Quentin Brown. The choir was founded in 2005 by several of St. Therese’s young parishioners, and currently has 53 singers from 27 different parishes in Archdiocese of Jakarta and 3 parishes in Archdiocese of Bogor. As the number of singers grows, Cappella victoria Jakarta evolves to focus on singing Sacred Polyphony music from the end of the 16th century, especially Roman Polyphony music and its various modern interpretations. Since 2006, Cappella victoria Jakarta routinely sings Sacred Polyphony music in Eucharistic Mass in St. Therese of Lisieux Parish. The choir has also sung Sacred Polyphony music in several other Catholic churches in Jakarta, Tangerang, Bandung and Semarang.
