With the addition of Richard Larson as artistic director and a handful of additional Singers, the group quickly found a footing in the cultural fabric of Denver, Colorado. Now entering its 15th full season of performing, the group has expanded into an auditioned ensemble of 54 volunteer Singers who meet weekly to rehearse. Many of the Singers come from schools with strong choral music programs, such as Augustana, Brigham Young, Concordia, Luther, St. Olaf, Wartburg, and the University of Northern Colorado. Kantorei established itself as one of the nation’s premier choral ensembles after performing as an auditioned choir for the 2003 National American Choral Directors Association Conference at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The choir has built an international reputation and has made it a trademark to include newly written music in its programmes. This is thanks to the work of Knut Nystedt (b. 1915), organist, composer and conductor, who returned to Norway in 1964 after studying in the USA and started a choir at the music department of the University of Oslo. The choir continues to recruit members from the department of music, as well as from the Norwegian Academy of Music in more recent years. The American choral tradition in which Nystedt was trained emphasises the importance of new music – a practice Nystedt brought back with him to Oslo. Knut Nystedt’s music became a vital element of Schola Cantorum’s repertoire. Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl became conductor in 2002, and has further established the choir’s firm position in Norway’s musical life. She has continued Nystedt’s tradition of performing modern music. Since 2009 and thanks to his founder, Oscar Allen, the Choral Project has been working with young Singers and developing young voices to excell in the interpretation and enjoyment of choral music and group singing. Due to an intensive and hard work, its members receive a full choral and scenic education, structured in the vocal individual technique and its different types of sound emission; on the development of corporal skills expression, and in the grupal practice of the choral exercise. This education is complemented by the permanent contact with other artistic disciplines as ballet and theatre are.
