The music was devised to short call order for a Mothers' Union Deanery Service in what was then Leeds Parish Church on Lady Day - the Feast of the Annunciation - in March 1979. Its accompaniment owes much to the setting of Robert Herrick's 'Litany to the Holy Spirit' by Peter Hurford of some twenty years earlier. 'Ave Maria' has been extensively recorded and broadcast by Choirs of all traditions, especially children's Choirs. Eventually, a version of the piece for four-part Choir emerged during the early weeks of 2003 in response to a request from Gordon Stewart on behalf of the BBC Radio 4 Pilgrim Choir and it is this more recent version that is sung here. This performance was recorded in Leeds Minster on Sunday 28th April 2013 during the recital of 'Music with Minster connections' sung by St Peter's Singers of Leeds, directed by the composer. We are girls who become like family through our shared passion for music. Each member auditioned by our Choirmaster, Andre van der Merwe, and attends Stellenberg High School. Our repertoire consists mainly of Gospel, Acapella, Classical, Folk/Ethnic, and Sacred music. We compete in various national and international competitions and strive to share beautiful music with the world while being cultural ambassadors for our country. Achievements: - Overall winners of the "ATKV Nasionale Applous-kompetisie" for 12 times (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011). - In 2002 they won the category for Women's Choirs at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales. - In 2004, we were awarded the highest percentage for any Choir at the World Choir Olympics. - In 2006 we won the much acclaimed Choir of the World trophy in Llangollen Wales. ...    less

Our collective history began in 1936 when Vladislav Sokolov (who was a a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory) created a children's Choir, which is almost 70 years was a model of Russian choral art throughout the Soviet Union and in many foreign countries ...  moreOur collective history began in 1936 when Vladislav Sokolov (who was a a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory) created a children's Choir, which is almost 70 years was a model of Russian choral art throughout the Soviet Union and in many foreign countries . 2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Sokolov, in the anniversary concert attended Choir, consisting of pupils of children's Choir. After the speech the former pupils of children's Choir - people of different professions and ages , realized that they all share a love of music and choral singing , decided not to leave, and formed a new team . Our first CD-drive, consisting of 19 works of Russian and foreign classics, Russian folk songs, songs by modern composers, was recorded in 2013. Our Choir took part in competitions and festivals in Russia, Austria, Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium where repeatedly became the winner.  less
