Founded in 2005, VOH has been entertaining Abu Dhabi audiences ever since! We have members of all skill levels and are a multicultural group. We use professionally made voice tracks to help learn our parts with precision, thus allowing us to put aside our sheet music and really enjoy the magic of hearing all the harmonies merged into the ringing chords of the Barbershop style! It’s the blend of these unique vocal parts that creates the space for an exciting ensemble. Barbershop singing style is unaccompanied, and creates four-part a cappella harmony. Although barbershop-style music is usually built on simple melodies and is relatively easy to sing, the "a cappella style" and the ear training necessary for independent part singing make it one of the most challenging and rewarding accomplishments of a vocal ensemble. A “friendly” audition is required, and a commi...    less

Directed by Cécile Bienz, this group of amateur but experienced singers is dedicated to sharing their passion for music and developing adventuresome and challenging collaborations that gather amateurs and professional musicians. These enthusiastic young women strive to build bridges between diverse cultural backgrounds: they are dedicated to musical excellence in the performance of both folk music as well as classical choral repertoire and contemporary creation. Our purpose is “to sing, in harmony, a variety of music for the enjoyment of the members as well as to give public and private performances for the listening pleasure of others”. During our musical season (September – June), the choir practices on Monday evenings from 7 – 9:30 PM at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Richmond. In addition to our weekly practices we usually plan one or two workshops with a choral clinician, as well as evenings with guest directors. We have two major performances per year, a Family Christmas Concert in December and a Spring Concert in May. We are very involved with our community and, by giving benefit concerts, help to raise funds for other organizations such as the Richmond Hospice Society, Canadian Cancer Foundation and Tim Horton’s Kids Camps. As a group member of the Richmond Community Arts Council, the Richmond Singers has established a legacy that attests to a vested interest in the arts in Richmond...    less

Morna Edmundson, Artistic Director, takes us through two of her warmups, 1) using folk song melodies to encourage legato singing and natural phrasing and 2) "Umbrellas" to ease the top of a woman's range. Elektra's mandate is "to inspire and lead in the choral art form through excellence in performance and the creation, exploration, and celebration of Women's repertoire." Your thoughts on the video? Let's start a conversation! Repertoire referenced in Episode One: Un Canadien errant, Quebec folk song, arr. Mark Sirett ( http://www.marksirett.ca ); Sheet music: Kelman Hall 04/20MMP29 (Music Plus) (http://musicpluscorp.com/KELMAN%20HALL/88/0); Audio recording available on iTunes and on "Pure Elektra" CD (http://elektra.ca/store/products/pure-elektra/ and http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/elektrawomenschoir2)  less
