It was founded more than 30 years ago with David Wordsworth as its Musical Director since 1995. The group comprises two cLassical choirs – an auditioned Chamber Choir and a much Larger non-auditioned Oratorio Choir; and two jazz choirs – an auditioned mixed Jazz Ensemble and a Larger non-auditioned all-female Jazz Choir. It also offers two different singing cLasses to meet the needs of beginners, intermediate and the more competent, experienced singer. The Addison Singers normally operate on three 10-week terms (the same as the schools) with a concert or recital at the end of each term. Rehearsals are held in Hammersmith on Monday (Jazz and Vocal Technique), Wednesday evenings (CLassical Choirs and Learn to Read Music cLass ) and Thursday afternoons (Musicianship for Singers cLass); the times and subscriptions depend on which choir or cLass you join. Two years after its founding, it was awarded 1st Prize at the 29th National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The group performed in various events such as Miss Earth Pageant in 2003 and 2004. The group was also one of the featured artists in the Samu’t-Saring Tinig V at the Cultural Center of the Philippines; in a concert at the CLamshell in Intramuros in February 2003; and in the International Youth Music Festival sponsored by NAMCYA held at the CCP in December 2003. In 2004, the choir released its debut CD featuring Ilocano favourites and winning competition pieces. In 2005, the choir was handed over to its new conductor, Sherberk Cabrales. I wrote “Pour Toi, Mère” (For You, Mother) which premiered at my senior composition recital. A few years Later, Kevin Fenton programmed that piece for his choir at FSU. He shared with me his strong connection with the piece at a time when his sister-in-Law, Peggy Fenton was also fighting breast cancer. Sadly, Peggy Fenton lost her fight with cancer in 2009. That same year Kevin contacted me and asked if I would write a piece in her memory for her husband and her two daughters. He shared with me a video of a presentation she did at the Mother’s Day banquet at her church, just a few days before her passing. The title of her presentation was “From Hats to Crown”. She shared stories about her life and the Many reLationship roles one pLays: as a daughter, a sister, as a wife, a mother and a teacher. As she talked about each role she wore a different hat.
