Statement of Purpose: Deo Cantamus is an organization of musicians whose purpose is to worship the true and living God through the performance of and instruction in quality vocal and instrumental music. Because worshipping God is our fundamental intention, this necessarily requires that we be in right relationship with the God we worship. We believe that this is only possible through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, we as individuals are followers of Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus is the fully divine and fully human Son of God. In addition we are frequently asked to sing at local events, weddings and celebrations. The Society was started in 1960, under our founder Gerald Brown, and we are still going strong. We are now led by James Gallagher, who has been working with us since 2009. We invite local young soloists and professionals to perform with us. World-class, professional Canadian soloists enjoy performing with with the choir time and again. Each season, the choir presents four or five concerts, incorporating a blend of repertoire from gospel to sacred to pop to oratorio. Classical highlights include St. Matthew Passion, Elijah, the annual Messiah, Carmina Burana, and Bach's B Minor Mass, which was a crowning achievement for the choir’s 10th and 20th anniversaries. Other popular concerts have featured the musical and comedic talents of Natalie Choquette, the famous and charismatic Michael Burgess, and the stirring sounds of spirituals under the direction of Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, whose own professional chamber choir, The Nathaniel Dett Chorale, headed for Washington to join the celebrations around President Obama’s inauguration.  less
