At the beginning, PSM-ITB sang only in campus society and subs...  moreOn February 11th 1962, few ITB students established Paduan Suara Mahasiswa Institut Teknologi Bandung (PSM-ITB or ITB Student Choir) which was the first university-based Choir in Indonesia. At the beginning, PSM-ITB sang only in campus society and subsequently performed in public. However since 1973, it participated in various national Choir competitions and repeatedly won the first prizes. This led PSM-ITB to become one of the most established Choirs in Indonesia. In several occasions, the Choir has been given the chance to perform in events attended by the President of Indonesia. It regularly performs in concerts, occasionally collaborated with other Choirs and orchestras. In 1968 PSM-ITB organized the 1st ITB Choir Festival (FPS-ITB). Since then the festival is held biannually and becomes the largest national Choir event in term of categories (from children to adult and folklore catagories) and participants. The Girl Choir, led by Artistic Director Wallis Peterson, has been extolled by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel as “imaginative, accessible, expressive, and entertaining”, gaining a reputation for delivering compelling concert programming. The Girl Choir’s repertoire is broad, from ancient to modern, classical to popular, sacred to secular, and folk to Broadway, encompassing many cultures, faiths, and traditions. Over the past seven seasons, the Girl Choir has commissioned and premiered works by noted choral composers, including Eleanor Daley, Bob Chilcott, and David Brunner. The original church, built in the 1880s, had a strong Choir ...  moreOur small but talented Choir consists mainly of young people. All Choir members receive a first-rate musical education. There has been a long tradition of musical excellence at St Laurence’s. The original church, built in the 1880s, had a strong Choir of men and boys who took part in the Festival of Britain services in 1951. When the new church was opened in 1968, the musical tradition continued. A new Walker organ was installed in the church, using some pipework from the old organ and Directors of Music have included David Sanger, Professor Roger Wibberley, Paul Dewhurst, Tom Fowkes, Marcus Wibberley, Iain Simcock and Andrew Ibbotson. The current Director of Music is Huw Morgan. Girls were first admitted to the Choir some ten years ago, but the Choir remains unique in this part of south-east London in that it continues to use only trebles (girls and boys) on the top line.
