Tomislav Veršić in the school year 1992/93 by merging two school ensembles founded a year earlier: Girls’ Choir, and traditional Dalmatian male vocal group (so-called “klapa”) “Šufit”. At the end of the following school year, the Choir participated for the first time at the Croatian Youth Music Festival, choral competition which is traditionally held in Varaždin, thereby winning the Silver Plaque. In 1996 the performance of the Choir at the same event was rewarded with Gold Plaque. After this success, the Choir received new, more experienced members, and began to act as the Mixed Choir of Cultural and Artistic Association “Aspalathos”. Although new ensemble soon became well recognized and multiply awarded, it ceased to be a part of the school and thus of this historical review as well. The aim of the Horizons Project is not simply to stimulate the creation of new South African choral music; but to stimulate the creation of a new generation of South African choral composers. There are 2 projects a year, each one focusing on a different genre of choral compositions. The Choir consists of 24 hand-picked singers. By inviting specific ‘head-hunted’ singers to join the Choir and not just having open public auditions, allows us to hold an extremely high level of musicianship, technical ability and an exclusivity that makes our sound unique.
