Black History Month
We took part of our rehearsal last night to honor Black History Month and celebrate the diversity of our Chorus. What better way to celebrate than with song. We chose "Oh Happy Day"' a late '60s gospel song with its roots from an 18th-century hymn.

English Translation:
Oh! What an unbearable pain!
Oh, gracious God!
What an unbearable sorrow!
The third bell of the Cathedral just rang;
The sun set long ago behind Mount Lopital...
Mother Nature derailed, straining everyone to misery.
Large structures and small rafts have turned to dust and ashes.
Jesus, Marie, and Joseph... Grace and Mercy...
Mother Nature derailed, straining everyone to misery.
We see, but we don't understand,
It happened so suddenly.
The earth trembled!
The earth shook harder than a desert's leaf.
Help! Help! Rescue me, I beg you!
I'm at a loss for words...
Dies irae, dies illa; (Day of wrath, day of anger)
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine.
(Grant them eternal rest, Lord.)
Haiti! Haiti! What an unbearable pain,
Tighten your belt.
Haiti! Haiti! You are a valiant woman,
Hang in there, don't give up...
Rubberneckers from everywhere ask: "How's it going?"... less

Originally published in Balletts and Madrigals, to Five Voyces, 1598.
Hark, all ye lovely saints above
Diana hath agreed with Love,
His fiery weapon to remove.
Fa la la.
Do you not see
How they agree?
Then cease fair ladies; why weep ye?
Fa la la.
See, see, your mistress bids you cease,
And welcome Love, with love's increase,
Diana hath procured your peace.
Fa la la.
Cupid hath sworn
His bow forlorn
To break and burn, ere ladies mourn.

Spera means hope in Latin, and it is a members’ shared vision on music. All members studied a sacred choral music under Koji Oguchi, choir director, when they were high school students. They were deeply touched by Oguchi’s music and established the Ensemble Choir SPERA. Making its debut in concert in March 2014 at Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, SPERA’s music was highly prized and well-reviewed in newspapers. It serves in Masses and services and performs in concerts as an ecuMenical choir, composed of students from Kitasato University, International Christian University, Hitotsubashi University and Rikkyo University.
