Since 2008 the St. Lawrence Choir has been under the direction of Michael Zaugg. The Swiss-born musician has distinguished himself as an innovative and versatile conductor on the Canadian choral scene. Active as artistic director, guest conductor, pedagogue and clinician, Michael Zaugg brings a wealth of experience and creativity to his work. St. Lawrence Choir was formed in 1972 by Iwan Edwards and a group of singers residing in the West Island of Montreal. Concerts were presented in Lachine until 1983 when the Choir relocated to downtown Montreal. All members are professional singers and musicians, all of them graduated the Higher Musical Academy in Lviv and their diverse musical backgrounds contribute to the musical expression of the ensemble.The group is flexible in number to expend into different styles of singing. All music are performed a cappella. The main areas of speciality are Orthodox church music (liturgical), folk and popular Ukrainian songs and some examples of original Ukrainian, world music as well as well-known a cappella classics. Several months previous, a number of likeminded individuals began to visualise the formation of a Male Choir for the Lower Llynfi Valley, something which this area of the County Borough of Bridgend, South Wales lacked. Following lengthy discussions with a number of experienced and well respected Choristers, we came up with some basic philosophies. • Keep the choir to a manageable size • Take our music to the community-at-large • Establish ourselves as a quality musical group • Encourage less experienced Choristers to grow in ability and musicality • Share our joy in singing One thing was fundamental, and that was to keep the choir `Ego-Free` their mantra being ‘Leave your Egos at the door as it’s the music that matters’. Their desire was to form a group in which lasting friendships would grow and be nurtured, with an aim to bond and enjoy singing, and at the same time, perform to the community, raise money for charity and have lots of pleasure doing so.
