Several months previous, a number of likeminded individuals began to visualise the formation of a Male Choir for the Lower Llynfi Valley, something which this area of the County Borough of Bridgend, South Wales lacked.
Following lengthy discussions with a number of experienced and well respected Choristers, we came up with some basic philosophies.
• Keep the choir to a manageable size
• Take our music to the community-at-large
• Establish ourselves as a quality musical group
• Encourage less experienced Choristers to grow in ability and musicality
• Share our joy in singing
One thing was fundamental, and that was to keep the choir `Ego-Free` their mantra being ‘Leave your Egos at the door as it’s the music that matters’.
Their desire was to form a group in which lasting friendships would grow and be nurtured, with an aim to bond and enjoy singing, and at the same time, perform to the community, raise money for charity and have lots of pleasure doing so.
Members of the Choir come from all over the County Borough of Bridgend and its surrounding areas, and from all walks of life. Age and background are not important, nor is the ability to read music – although some experience is obviously an advantage. There isn’t an audition, just a short voice test in order to place the respective chorister in the correct section of the Choir.
Bois Goetre-Hen is not just a casual “sing-a-long”, albeit we are all amateurs, but are fortunate enough to be conducted and accompanied by professional musicians.
The choir delights in making music and continues to maintain the great Welsh tradition of Male Choral singing and in their relatively short existence have already performed publically on over 250 occasions.
The Choir have quickly gained a reputation for excellence in performance. Whilst maintaining the best of Welsh Male Choral Tradition, the Choir has also sought to be innovative and in doing so has a current repertoire of modern and contemporary music. less
