Founded in September 2000 by a group of friends from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the choir comprises mainly of recent graduates and current students of Durham University, but also welcomes singers from all over the North East, and includes ...  moreFounded in September 2000 by a group of friends from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the choir comprises mainly of recent graduates and current students of Durham University, but also welcomes singers from all over the North East, and includes many of the region’s teachers. In May, the choir travelled to Italy to take part in the “Venezia in Musica” International Choral Competition. They won first prize in the secular music category, came runners up in the sacred music category, and received the “Outstanding Performance” prize for Bogorditsye Dyevo by Rachmaninov. They have been awarded “Choir of the Day” at all five BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year regional rounds they have entered, and in 2008 reached the adult category finals in the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, alongside the six other best adult choirs in the country. Their stylish performances, featuring early Medieval plainchant right through to commissions of West Australian composers, have been delighting audiences and critics alike since 1995. The Consort prides itself on unearthing lesser-known early music (such as music of De Brossard, Certon, and Clereau), showcasing larger-scale choral masterpieces (Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers, various Bach Cantatas), and presenting high-quality interpretations of well-known classics (Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Durufle's Requiem, Britten's Hymn to St. Cecilia, Allegri's Miserere and Tavener's Song for Athene). A restless, energetic SATB piece suitable for collegiate choirs. A driving piano part--influenced by minimalism and rock music--provides a rhythmic impetus for more expansive, colorful vocal lines. At turns frenzied, lyrical, and visceral, this piece pays disillusioned tribute to that not-so-glamorous icon of the open road, the Greyhound bus.

The 35 members of Bat-Kol, ages 12 to 18, perform with the Israeli Opera, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra as well as taking part in theater productions, television programs, national public events and concerts for the general public. The choir has participated in numerous international festivals and competitions in which it won many gold medals. In April 2011 the choir won three gold medals and the Grand Prix of the Slovakia Cantat international competition in which tens of European male, female and mixed choirs competed.  less
