The choir was founded in 1838 by Fredrik Pacius and...  moreThe Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki – Akademiska Sångföreningen or Akademen in Swedish – is a Fennoswedish (i.e. Swedish-speaking) male voice student choir based in the Finnish capital of Helsinki. The choir was founded in 1838 by Fredrik Pacius and is the oldest extant choir in Finland. At present, Akademen has around 60 active Singers, most of whom are University students. However, quite a few choose to stay in the active choir long after graduation, which makes for a healthy mix of youth and experience. We give concerts regularly in Finland, and travel abroad as frequently as possible. In addition to all the Scandinavian and most European countries, Akademen has been on tour in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Singapore. We believe that ambitious musical development can go hand-in-hand with tradition, and work enthusiastically to keep alive the dialogue between past and present.  less

We give you the pleasure of enjoying fine music and knowing you are a part of a musical community - a team that enriches the life of all of us. We currently have about 50 members. We feature a variety of music from popular to classical. Our selections are fun and challenging for Singers and entertaining and rewarding for audiences. Open rehearsals for potential new members are held in September and January at the beginning of the rehearsal seasons. No formal auditions are held, but we do expect new members to be experienced in four part choral singing, and to have some ability to read along with sheet music. We recommend listening on a smartphone with headphones via the YouTube app! Then the immersive impressions are the best :) After the last premiere of the You Raise Me Up recording, the Academic Choir of the Gdańsk University of Technology worked intensively on the next choral song. This time we went a step further – we created a truly virtual choir in the virtual cathedral. The recording was made in 360° technology, which means that we can listen and watch both sound and image in the full sphere. To capture the full effect, it's best to listen to this presentation in headphones on your smartphone. You can then feel like inside the old temple surrounded by sound from everywhere.  less
