Our purpose is “to sing, in harmony, a variety of Music for the enjoyment of the members as well as to give public and Private performances for the listening pleasure of others”. During our Musical season (September – June), the Choir practices on Monday evenings from 7 – 9:30 PM at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Richmond. In addition to our weekly practices we usually plan one or two workshops with a choral clinician, as well as evenings with guest directors. We have two major performances per year, a Family Christmas Concert in December and a Spring Concert in May. We are very involved with our community and, by giving benefit concerts, help to raise funds for other organizations such as the Richmond Hospice Society, Canadian Cancer Foundation and Tim Horton’s Kids Camps. Launched in 2006, this Choir for treble and changing voices continues to expand its horizons, develop its membership and satisy a variety of Musical tastes. The Choir has toured throughout British Columbia and Alberta. In July 2011, they sang in Ottawa at the Unisong festival for Canada Day, and in July 2013 the group was featured at the presitigious and exciting international Festival 500 in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Wherever the Choir travels, we spread the joy of Music-making and hope to bring communities together through song. Shumayela offers a focus on thorough and excellent Music education, with singers learning about healthy vocal production, the body-voice connection, and vibrant performance presence as well as a strong emphasis on Musical literacy, Music theory, and sightsinging skills.
