First of all, I think that it is not the singer who has "split personality disorder" - it is the expectation of the LISTENER who turns this into a problem. If we judge a person a la: "They are so shy, they can't have a voice" or "They are so ugly, they can't possibly sing", that's quite frankly OUR problem, not the one of the singer. Who ever said that a nervous wreck must be nervous performing? Maybe that's the only thing in life they feel comfortable with. Never judge a book by its cover.
Singing IS closely related to out personality, it's not as black and white though as "you can or can't tell by just looking at a person if they have a natural thing for performing etc".
I personally don't perceive the mismatch you are describing, that's not to say though other people don't. I think it depends on how we look at other people, and what we expect, or don't expect, of them.
