About Me I have worked in many different arenas and musical genres in the last 20 years, but my passion lies in the fact that music and sound are extremely valuable for creating human connection, and human connection is essential to creating strong societies, and happy people. I love to demystify music, and focus on empowering people to find their voices, sing, because I have yet to meet someone who can look me in the eye and say “I don’t LIKE to sing”.
I also greatly enjoy merging the visual with the auditory. To me a musical performance needs a multi sensory experience. I suppose that’s why I’ve always been drawn to theatre and film. With Burstin’ with Broadway I work to get the most out of the production, to make it as theatrical as possible, while remaining true to the time constraints and technical restraints that I am working with.
Music is about communication, about sharing an experience with the audience & listener. If the listener is not moved, then I have not achieved my goal as a musician and/or conductor. I also believe music is about play, and I can’t imagine a more fun way to play than to put ourselves into harmony (literally!) with other singers and musicians. There is an amazing synergy and energy which comes out of playing music together.
I draw on my strong classical training and extensive vocal training to help empower people to use their voices, to find their voices and to celebrate singing and the joy of singing. To practice what should be as easy as speaking, in a society where music is very much a spectator sport and where we have the philosophy that music making should only be done by those with extreme skill, technique and so called “talent”.
It is by working with community and directing choirs that I have successfully created a medium for “regular” people to be part of a singing community which works towards the goal of creating fun and entertaining concerts, and where we focus on the process of making music, which to me means always focusing on communicating with the audience.
I am also passionate about debunking the myth of “tone-deafness”.
