  • About Me The award-winning Surrey Children's Choir was founded in September 1992 by director, Stephen Horning and 35 choristers. The Surrey Children’s Choir is a special project of the Surrey Choral Arts Project Society, which is a non-profit, registered charity. Our singers, aged 6-70, are grouped into the Junior and Intermediate Training Choirs, the Surrey Children’s Choir, the Surrey Chamber Choir, the Surrey Youth Chorus and the Surrey Community Chorus adult choir.

The Surrey Children’s Choir is a consistent gold medal winner at local festivals, hailed by Gerald Van Wyck, Vancouver Community College, adjudicator as “one of the best children’s choirs in Canada". These exuberant young voices are heard often at civic and community events and have appeared live on CBC Radio. In April, 2009, the Surrey Children’s Choir, Surrey Chamber Choir, and Surrey Youth Chorus participated in the Vancouver Kiwanis Festival to glorious accolades from adjudicators. The ‘Chamber Choir’ won the Kiwanis festival and continued on to win the Performing Arts B.C. Provincial Festival at the end of May 2009 and the National Music Festival in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, held in August 2009. In the same summer, the choirs travelled to Llangollen, Wales, to compete in the International Choral Eisteddfod, with glowing results. The Children’s Choir and Chamber Choir both participated in many cultural events during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, including the Surrey Torch Lighting Ceremony and concerts at LiveCity YaleTown, LiveCity Surrey and at Place de la Francophone on Granville Island.

The "family" also includes older levels, a treble chamber choir, a mixed young adult chorus, and a community adult chorus. The Junior and Intermediate Training Choirs (JTC and ITC) provide a program of sequentially developed skills which prepare choristers for admission into the Surrey Children's Choir. The training choirs perform annually at the Family Christmas Concert and Year End concert (held in May of each year). They also often compete at the Fraser Valley Kiwanis Music Festival, always with great results. The training choirs may also perform at various events in the community. The SCC, a treble-voice choir of boys and girls aged 12-18 is a consistent gold medal winner at local festivals, hailed by Gerald Van Wyck, Vancouver Community College professor as "one of the best children's choirs in Canada". This four part chorus (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) is devoted to music of all styles, including Classical, Broadway and Contemporary tunes. These dynamic and talented singers range in age from 14-25, and include young women in gr.11 and higher, and young men with changed voices. The SYC annually participates in the Family Christmas Concert, and choreographed year end show. They also stage an Orchestra concert each spring, which has presented pieces such as Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, Vivaldi's Gloria, and Requiems by Mozart, Faure, Rutter, and Daley, to name a few. This year, the SYC looks forward to singing Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. The Youth Chorus joined the senior and chamber choirs in their 2009 tour to the UK. They were ecstatic to receive 8th place standing in the Mixed Voices category at a festival that boasts participants from over 50 different countries.
