  • About Me I am an Ontario-based composer. My music has been performed by The Orlando Chamber Singers (FL), The Amadeus Choir (Toronto), soprano Alessandra Rossi-Fillipi and the Blythwood Winds.

    Works include:

♩ MIXED CHOIR WITH ORCHESTRA ♩

"Requiem" (2007): a varied selection of secular poems/writings as well as traditional Latin text set to music in a six-movement composition for mixed choir and two soloists with orchestra (performed in 2008 by The Orlando Chamber Singers under the direction of Gregory Ruffer).

    ♩ MIXED CHOIR A CAPPELLA ♩

"In the Shadows" (2021): a delicate song for SATB (with divisi) based on the poem of the same name by Emily Pauline Johnson/Tekahionwake (a Canadian poet of native Mohawk and English heritage). It's a soft, flowing hymn to the bucolic splendor of the Canadian wilderness.

"Three Canadian Nocturnes" (2016): ethereal, dreamlike songs revolving around sleep, lullabies and the night utilizing poetry from Canadian poets: John McCrae, Archibald Lampman, and Emily Pauline Johnson. I finished this work in anticipation of 2017, the 150th anniversary of Canada.

"If" (2009): Kipling's masterful poem set to music for SATB a cappella choir.

"Gaudete" (2015): a stark rendering of the text from the medieval Swedish carol, sung in Latin.

♩ MIXED CHOIR WITH PIANO ♩

"A Christmas Fancy" (2015): adapted from a Robert Fuller Murray poem, this lyrical carol paints the scene of a man watching his beloved awaken on Christmas morning.

"Ring Out, Wild Bells" (2013) A song for the new year based on the poem by Tennyson. This work won first place in its through the Toronto Amadeus Choir Seasonal Song-Writing Competition, as was performed by the choir in 2013.

    ♩ CHILDREN'S/YOUTH CHOIR ♩

"Zodiac" (2021): A song cycle for young voices (with piano accompaniment) based on the Chinese Zodiac with 12 short sections each depicting an animal from the set using both English and Mandarin lyrics. The work is arranged stylistically in three sets of four modes (whole tone, major, minor, pentatonic) to depict the traits/qualities of the zodiac animals.

    ♩ WOMEN'S CHOIR (SSA WITH PIANO) ♩

"Dickinson Song Cycle" (2009): Four of Emily's poems for female voices and piano ranging from pastoral, to sombre ("The Chariot"), to wistful, to exuberant ("Rouge Gagne").

    ♩ MEN'S CHOIR (TTBB WITH PIANO) ♩

"Shadows Foul and Fair" (2016): drawing text from Macbeth's final soliloquy in Act V and transitioning to Sonnet no. 37 ("As a decrepit father takes delight"), male voices curse a despised legacy, then rise from ashes as a weary father who is restored through his love and care of his son.

    ♩ VOCAL MUSIC ♩

"Emily & Edna" a song cycle for Soprano soloist with piano accompaniment. This work pairs together various poems by Emily Dickinson and Edna St. Vincent Millay.

    ♩ CHAMBER MUSIC ♩

"Casa Loma Wind Quintet" (2014): premiered in April 2015 by the Blythwood Winds at the Music Gallery in Toronto and discussed on Metro Morning (CBC Radio), this five-movement work paints a portrait of Henry Pellatt, his wife Mary and their landmark Toronto home, Casa Loma. Thanks to partial funding from FACTOR, this work as now been professionally recorded and is available on iTunes (tracks can be heard on YouTube).

    ♩ PIANO MUSIC ♩

Wiosna Variations, a set of piano variations on a beautiful theme by Chopin (video up on YouTube). Also, some smaller pieces for solo piano.

The link above is an excerpt from the Requiem and it, with many other videos of my music can be viewed on YouTube (search Nathaniel Barnes composer).

Outside of composing, I enjoy creating Classical music and literature quizzes on Sporcle and was a three-day Jeopardy champion (November 2008)
