  • About Me In 1969, parents and grandparents involved in the Columbus Maennerchor, Damenchor, and other Central Ohio German singing societies, wishing to pass on and share German culture and traditions with their children, formed the Columbus Kinderchor/Jugenchor, which operates as part of the Columbus Maennerchor organization. This children's chorus quickly became one of the most dynamic choruses in the city.

The Kinderchor, which means "children's chorus" and the Jugendchor, which means "youth chorus", attribute their success to the dedication to the children. Membership is open to all children regardless of nationality, recognizing the shared German heritage so prevalent to Central Ohio. While our focus remains the children and the children's choral music, gatherings and trips are planned to include the entire family. We aim to share not only the fun of German singing, but also to impart the joy of German hospitality.

The children's repertoire is tailored to meet the needs of growing voices and a variety of skill levels. The very youngest learn German nursery rhymes that teach the concepts of opposites, numbers, times and seasons, and parts of the body. The older children learn to sing in rounds and two and three part harmony. At all levels, there is a heavy component of building German vocabulary and good musical practices.

The Columbus Kinder- and Jugendchor perform a number of times throughout the year. For folk festivals such as Oktoberfest and Maifest, our uniforms are Greman Tracht: Lederhosen or Trachtenanzug (suit) for boys and Dirndls or Landhaus (German country) dresses for girls. For more formal events we wear black pants (boys) or skirts (girls), white shirts or blouses and ribbons. Costumes are available for rental/purchase at a very reasonable fee.

Practices are every evening August through June. The jugendchor rehearsals begin at 6PM and Kinderchor at 6:30PM.

If you are interested in joining the Columbus Kinderchor, please come to one of our practices during our recruitment month of September and January. You may contact us for more information at info@ColumbusKinderchor.org.
