Traditional Sesotho South African traditional music is known for their movement and dancing in their songs, and the UP Youth Choir accentuates this by highlighting the movement in their performance.

Following a competitive selection process each September, eighteen gifted students are awarded a scholarship, with recipients of the award coming from a range of academic disciplines across the University, from Music to Medicine, Law, Agricultural Science, Commerce and Engineering. The Choir regularly broadcasts on Irish television and radio. Since its formation in 1999, the group frequently performs with orchestras, including the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the Earley Musicke Ensemble and the European Union Chamber Orchestra, and on the University campus with the UCD Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonic Choir. Concert group counts about 60 people, mainly students, academic teachers and friends outside college. Our repertoire has about 80 a capella works (from medieval to contemporary composers), large sacred forms by Haendel, Mozart and Mendellsohn Bartholdy and 40 carols. We have performed at several festivals and international events (Germany, France, Switzerland, Bulgaria). The Choir is made up of undergraduate and graduate students auditioned from all faculties and grades and performs several concerts every year, and at important University ceremonies. Participation always begins in the Fall semester, and continues all the way to graduation commencement in June. The Choir performed in joint concerts with Choirs from Duke University, Yale University, Harvard University, Perugia University and Missouri Drury University.  less
