It was Mr. Bonnie Fonseka, a distinguished Old Boy, who's vision soon came to be a Benedictine tradition, by forming a musical club. This prompted The Birth of The First College Choir. The Choir acquired a reputation for top class singing and in addition often invited to perform at important national events such as to perform with oTher schools when princess Elizabeth visited Ceylon in 1952. Since Mr. Bonnie Fonseka’s retirement There were many dedicated young musicians who undertook The responsibility and uphill task of training The Choir. Some of Them were Mr. Robert Joseph, Mr. Francis De Almeida, Mr. Nicholas Johnpulle, Rev Bro. Augustine and Mr. Ravein George. Mr. Ravein George revived The Choir in 1996 and guided Them to reach The height of success as being cited as a Classical Choir. The Choir won The all island singing competition in The year 1999. When Odwa Mvunge return to his Birth community in 2012, after completing his music education studies at Nelson Mandela University, not much has changed. There still was no place in Zolani for The youth to express Themselves in cultural activities that was not offered at school nor in The community. After school The youth would loiter around without direction. This lead to The formation of The Zolani Youth choir. The basic idea and purpose of The Choir is to equip youth of our community with basic music skills. The Choir consists of 25 scholars from different schools who are between The ages of 12 and 26 years. These scholars have no professional training or background in formal music, but have proven to have a passion and love for The art. Last July, over 100 BIG Sing members flash mobbed The Maldon Tesco Store and The YouTube video has had over 16,000 views, raising money for Cancer Research UK. As well as community events, The BIG Sing have hosted Their own sold out shows in Essex and have many more coming up this year! As The BIG Sing grows we are continuing to reach out to more people of all ages and backgrounds. We aim to unite people with uplifting music and have seen The choir members grow in confidence, experience The thrill of performing on stage, make new friends and belong to a new choir family.
