After one season, Gerald moved to Montreal and...  moreThe choir was founded in 1964 by Gerald Wheeler, organist and choirmaster of St Matthew's Church in Ottawa. The choir consisted of 20 singers. The first concert was December 1964 at the National Gallery. After one season, Gerald moved to Montreal and Brian Law took over as director of St Matthew's church and took over directing the Cantata Singers as well. In 1969, the choir was invited to sing Purcell's Dido and Aneas at the new National Arts Centre in November. To balance the NAC Orchestra, the choir increased in size to 44 members. The CSO became the choir in residence of the NAC and has performed in many NAC productions over the years, singing under many world renowned conductors such as, Eduardo Mata, Helmuth Rilling, Franz Paul Decker, andrew Parrott, Trevor Pinnock, Ermanno Florio, Ivor Bolton, Richard Hickox, Paul Goodwin, andreas Delfs, Jane Glover, Martin Pearlman, William Boughton, Thierry Fischer, Gerald Wirth, Earl Stafford, Frank McNamara, David Lockington and Eric Kunzel among others. Òran began as an alumni offshoot of the Kokopelli Youth choir, but it has since developed into a group made up of young adults from all over Edmonton and the surrounding area. Each brings a different viewpoint to the group, but all are united in their passion for singing. The choir stresses the same philosophical goals as its younger counterpart, striving to achieve musical excellence and artistic integrity, as well as combining new interpretive techniques with more traditional choral expertise. Above all, the group is dedicated to sharing joy in song with each other, with other choirs, and with audiences around Edmonton and across Canada. With thirty-five voices and a multi-talented band, the choir’s repertoire ranges from hip-hop, reggae, traditional and contemporary gospel. The director and founder of this anointed choir is Shawn Cotterell. Shawn Cotterell’s first musical experience began at the age of seven singing in a church choir.
