Satie/Rain: "As dawn breaks,” #1 (Summer) Ottawa Four Seasons Suite (sung by Matthew Curtis)

Creating a choral adaptation of a piano piece has its challenges. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year.
Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted.
"As dawn breaks" was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful.
NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group ... less

Māori folk melody "Hoea ra" (sometimes known as "Come, O maidens") by Pariare Tomoana (~1875 - 1946). David Smith and Harry Connelly adapted it and added a verse for use as a Mother's Day tribute. This choral arrangement was made by Terence Maskell in 2006 for The Graduate Choir NZ for its Mother's Day recital at that time.

set to music for six part mixed voices SAT-SAT)
The title of this work (Canticula Ursae Minoris/Songs of the Little Bear) comes from the origin of the melodies:
Many years ago I wrote an "Oratorio" based on Winnie the Pooh (The Expotition to the North Pole)
and gave each character little melodic leitmotifs,
such as "Sing ho for the life of a bear" (which becomes "to be a light to lighten the Gentiles" in the Nunc Dimittis),
"They all went off to discover the pole" (which is the initial theme of the Magnificat)
and "What I say, said Eeyore, is that it's unsettling" (which becomes the "Glory be to the Father" section at the end of each canticle)
The original and much simpler "oratorio" work, called Poohratorio of course, may be published once AA Milne goes into public domain (2031).

Mary full of grace,

Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
for thou hast borne the Saviour of our souls.
