Dedicated to developing new audiences for music rooted in Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian women's vocal traditions, Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries of folk song as a living and evolving expressive art form. Kitka's activities include an Oakland-based home series of concerts and vocal workshops; regional, national, and international touring; programs in the schools; recording, publication, and broadcast projects; master artist residencies; commissioning; community service work; and adventuresome collaborations.  less

In May, 2013, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus to join the choir in...  more"Ubi Caritas II: Through Infinite Ages" (Ola Gjeilo) is sung by The Central Washington University Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director). In May, 2013, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus to join the choir in recording 4 of his pieces. The other three were "Sanctus", "Luminous Night of the Soul", and "Vast Eternal Skies" This performance of Gjeilo's "Ubi Caritas II" is from that session, which included a rendition on which the composer later joined the choir and improvised an accompaniment. In this video the choir sings the piece in its published (unaccompanied) version. This was Mr. Gjeilo's second time on our campus, the first was in the spring of 2011, which resulted in 5 videos and a DVD (http://goo.gl/Xld0o) As of 2013, the CWU Chamber Choir also has recorded videos of the music of Byrd, Monteverdi, Muehleisen, Singh, Victoria, and Rautavaara on YouTube. Coffee chocolate, and cafe au lait Ivoried-saffron and saffroned-ivory, Bronze and brass, copper and rose gold, Tea and pale butter, golden almond, Infinite varieties of browns and tans, Pale rose, pink, and soft rose cream, Mahogany, oak, cedar, and champagne. These are the colors of people I see, Not black and white, not yellow and red. Those false colors no longer will do. Give us a palette to paint us true.  less
