LISTEN (Melissa Dunphy)
[2019 Resonance Ensemble Commission]
Texts adapted from testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, by Anita F. Hill and Christine Blasey Ford
Katherine FitzGibbon, conductor
The composer writes:
Writing LISTEN was an emotional process. The first hurdle was deciding which excerpts from the testimonies of Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford to set, which meant reading and listening and living inside these women’s harrowing stories for an extended period. And like most women, the most discomfiting aspect of listening to their testimony is the recognition. When I first heard about Ford’s experience, I was disturbed by its similarity to an incident that happened to me. I went to an all-girls private school, and we sometimes partnered with an all-boys private school for musicals. One night when I was 15, after a performance, while we were still on stage, one of the boy... less

THE COMPOSER WRITES: There comes a time in every child’s life when they will have “the talk” with a trusted adult. That talk is usually centered around topics relating to sexual maturation – the birds and the bees. However, in the life of a black child, there’s an additional talk that needs to happen: what to do if they are pulled over or have an encounter with the police. It boils down to four basic principles with the fourth being the ultimate goal: 1. Pull over. Don’t run. Keep calm; 2. Keep your hands where they can see them; 3. Be polite. Save your rage; 4. Get home safely. (The phrase “save your rage” is credited to Resonance board member, Jasmine Love... less

The KCKCC Vocal Jazz Program takes pride in performing professional-level Vocal jazz ensemble literature. Our program has grown to 3 Vocal jazz ensembles. The music we perform represents a crossover of the jazz and popular music idioms. The students in the KCKCC VJ program learn Jazz Education through a variety of methods. First of all, each of these students take private Vocal jazz coachings weekly. They also perform music by professional Vocal ensembles, arrangements by well-known Vocal jazz educators, and learn jazz and popular music standards (both through the ensemble and in private coachings).

We are committed to building community through excellence in a cappella harmony, and we love to learn. We rehearse weekly to improve our Vocal skills and build lasting friendships in the process. Although we have diverse backgrounds, our members thrive by working together to achieve shared goals.
We sing a range of repertoire from jazz standards to 21st-century pop, barbershop to show tunes, but most importantly we sing a cappella. As well as entertaining audiences across the eastern suburbs of Melbourne we compete regularly in barbershop harmony competitions at a national level.
Vocal Vibes is available to sing at private and community events - find out more by visiting our below pages, or get in touch with us at info@Vocalvibes.org.au
