NDV, whose concerts range in style and period from the medieval to the contemporary, takes special pleasure in exploring the music of living Composers and has given many Irish premières –including James Macmillan’s Cantos Sagrados and Penderecki’s Stabat Mater – as well as eight world premières of works by Irish Composers including Linda Buckley, Enda Bates, Jonathan Nangle, Garrett Sholdice, and Ian Wilson. As well as giving concerts, NDV is a regular participant in competitions, both internationally and at home in Ireland. The aim of the Horizons Project is not simply to stimulate the creation of new South African choral music; but to stimulate the creation of a new generation of South African choral Composers. There are 2 projects a year, each one focusing on a different genre of choral compositions. The choir consists of 24 hand-picked singers. By inviting specific ‘head-hunted’ singers to join the choir and not just having open public auditions, allows us to hold an extremely high level of musicianship, technical ability and an exclusivity that makes our sound unique. Each composer set verses for his or her own star sign. Leo was premiered by The Esoterics on December 7, 8, 14 & 15, 2002, in concerts in Tacoma, Mercer Island and Seattle, Washington. The piece was named as a Finalist in 2007 Cincinnati Camerata Composition Competition, and is a Project Encore selection.
