Creating a choral adaptation of a piano piece has its challenges. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year.
Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted.
"As dawn breaks" was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful.
NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group ... less

This tradition caused another one: in the end of each choir's anniversary concert, all the former choristers being present among the audience come to the stage and sing these famous choruses together with the main part of the choir.

In mid-April, 2011, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus to join the choir in recording 3 of his pieces, (the teaser/trailer URL is found below)
This performance of Gjeilo's "Ubi Caritas" is from that session, following a rendition in which the composer joined the choir and improvised an accompaniment (URL below). In this video the choir sings the piece in its published (unaccompanied) version.
One behind-the-scenes comment: On the last page of the piece, when the first melodic material occurs again - Ola, who was sitting in the hall, asked half the choir to hum while the other half sang to create a more ethereal effect.
the CWU Chamber Choir also has recorded videos of the music of Monteverdi, Muehleisen, Singh, Victoria, and Rautavaara on YouTube

In the 16th century, this Jewish Italian composer and violinist, fellow-student and collaborator of Claudio Monteverdi, wrote some thirty liturgical pieces for three to eight mixed voices. they fell into oblivion. In 1870, in Paris, Samuel Naumbourg, helped by the young Vincent d'Indy, brought them together in a volume and made them partially adopted by some synagogues. "Shir Lama'alot" for five voices is a composition taken from Rossi's book "Hashirim Asher Lishlomo", printed in Venice in 1623.
