About the work: My sister is an English teacher at the Minnesota International Middle School in Minneapolis which provides a safe and inclusive environment for East African immigrant students to learn (many of whom are Somali). Most of these students came to the USA to escape the violent civil war that has plagued Somalia since 1991. Seeking a better life for their children, these students' parents risked their lives to come to the USA - a valiant act of love. I wanted to tell their story through music and so I asked my sister to have her students write poems about their experiences leaving their home and coming to the USA. I received over 100 poems that contain passion, pride, emotion, and vivid stories of the sights and sounds ...    less

Together with the jazz-saxophonist Stefan Kuchel and the Sirius Quartet, the young men's choir performs contemporary works. The Quartet members describe themselves as artists of improvisation who break out of the conventional vocabulary of sound for a string quartet. Most pieces on this CD were written especially for the Sonux ensemble, and thus composed to the singers' strengths. "We have worked on these pieces together with the composers, and given them their first performances over the course of the last five years. This disc features only world premiere recordings and, literally, unheard of choral music, " the choir's director Hans-Joachim Lustig notes. The works recorded on this CD focus on the topics of light and love. The eponymous poem by Charles Anthony Silvestri that lends its title to the disc frames and connects the two topics. This festive round dance from the northwestern mountains of Georgia features a text consisting entirely of nonsense words such as "worera", "voisa-rera", "dila-wadila", etc. Leslie is performing dance steps learned from a group of young dancers we met in Dmanisi, Georgia.  less
