I grew up in the Philippines where culture is as colorful and diverse as the number of its islands — all 7,107 of it. A quick Google search of “Philippine History” will give you a peak at our rich history of pre-colonial kingdoms (rajahnates, sultanates, etc.) which began to rise about 900 AD. Prior to Christianization of the Central and Northern parts, and even prior to the Islamization of the Southern parts of the country — these Philippine kingdoms shared with its neighbori... less

The Simon Carrington Chamber Singers – a world-class choral music ensemble led by renowned artistic director Simon Carrington – engages and enriches audiences through concerts, recordings and educational programs.
Background
The Simon Carrington Chamber Singers (SCCS), led by artistic director Simon Carrington, is a world class choral music ensemble based in Kansas City. The group was founded in 2008 by three of Carrington’s former students who shared the desire to form an elite professional vocal chamber ensemble under his direction.
SCCS, an ensemble of 24 Singers, performs a diverse and challenging repertoire that spans the ages. The group showcases a unique sound that reflects Carrington’s musical sensibilities: a clear, bright tone with a measured use of vibrato which allows a clear and expressive delivery of the text. SCCS is made up of top-tier choral Singers from across North America. Each year, the Singers meet for a week of intensive rehearsals that culminate in public concerts in K... less

--Nou Se Limyè-- (We Are The Light)
Children of light, do not stay in the dark;
Truth and Love are stronger than the law.
From the beginning of time the word was spoken:
Darkness and evil had invaded the earth;
Everything was functioning in reverse.
The Lord decided to put order in disorder.
"The Lord said, let there be light: and there was light"
Light in the universe, light in the depths of our hearts.
So many good things in the beautiful flame of this light:
Awareness, development,
Understanding and compassion,
Truth and dignity,
Wisdom and justice,
Liberty and hope,
Love and happiness.
Children of light, do not stay in the dark.
We must shine for all the earth.
We must shine in all darkness.
We must shine, we ... less

A few years later, Kevin Fenton programmed that piece for his Choir at FSU. He shared with me his strong connection with the piece at a time when his sister-in-law, Peggy Fenton was also fighting breast cancer. Sadly, Peggy Fenton lost her fight with cancer in 2009. That same year Kevin contacted me and asked if I would write a piece in her memory for her husband and her two daughters. He shared with me a video of a presentation she did at the Mother’s Day banquet at her church, just a few days before her passing.
The title of her presentation was “From Hats to Crown”. She shared stories about her life and the many relationship roles one plays: as a daughter, a sister, as a wife, a mother and a teacher. As she talked about each role she wore a different hat. She ended with a crown, shar... less
