In the time that doesn't want to pass,
in my heart I feel a strength
that pushes me to say: "us"
and when the Sun has gone,
I look for you in the sky among the other stars.
As my soul is with you in the sweet night,
and feels happy waiting for you,
because nowhere is far.
Recorded by Matthew Curtis (ChoralTracks).

Silver Moon
You taught me the sound of silence.
There are too many words that don't mean anything.
Now you are white and in you, my color reflects.
I eat memories but can't get full.
Long nights go by when I howl for you like a dog.
You stop but I went into the silver Moon.
The storms passed and wars stopped.
Times changed and we changed as well.
My story now is white and in it your color reflects.
After three lifetimes we will meet again.
The castle will resurface to which even time ... less

Another Lullaby for Insomniacs
BY A.E. STALLINGS
Sleep, she will not linger:
She turns her Moon-cold shoulder.
With no ring on her finger,
You cannot hope to hold her.
She turns her Moon-cold shoulder
and tosses off the cover.
You cannot hope to hold her:
She has another lover.
She tosses off the cover
and lays the darkness bare.
She has another lover.
Her heart is otherwhere.
She lays the darkness bare.
You slowly realize
Her heart is otherwhere.
There's distance in her eyes.
You slowly realize
That she will never linger,
With distance in her eyes
and no ring on her finger. less

THE SEAL LULLABY (Eric Whitacre)
Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us,
and black are the waters that sparkled so green.
The Moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us
At rest in the hollows that rustle between.
Where billow meets billow, then soft by thy pillow;
Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease!
The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee,
Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas.

Inside water, a water wheel turns.
The star circulates with the Moon.
We live in the night ocean wondering,
What are these lights?

Water Ruminations is a setting of six poems by the thirteenth-century poet Rumi, in English translations from the Persian by Coleman Barks, for double choir and organ. The poetry sings of literal and spiritual connections between water and sky, a drop of water and human life, flowing water and love, drinking water and its container, the giddiness of spring and rolling seas, and the ocean's gifts and singing. Its images, from 800 years ago, speak to us with both vivid immediacy and transcendence.
The idea for the piece originated with the Mellon Elemental Arts Initiative, which proposed funding activities that would involve students in ar... less
