Music by Alejandro D. Consolacion II
Based on the theme from the movie "Il Postino" by Luis Enriquez Bacalov
Humans are subject to being relational with one another. With this, one of the horrors the Covid-19 pandemic has caused is the shutdown of all possible aspects of normal human interaction, and choral singing and rehearsals for the same are no exemption to the new rule. This does not mean, however, that distance defeats the purpose of creating harmony, especially in music.
It is in this light that I formed a virtual choir from my group, CANTUS, as well as other friends from various music communities.
This is the product of a team effort: the singers, the pianist, the video and audio editor; you name it. Technology has given us all kinds of possibilities. Father José Maurício (1767-1830), himself a mulatto, grandson of slaves, son of freed slaves, was one of the exponents in music of the Americas. Musically educated in the classical tradition, he began teaching at 12 and writing at age 16. He reached the rank of Master of the Royal Chapel (most important post for a musician in Brazil Cologne) appointed by King John IV and conducted the first performances of Mozart’s "Requiem" and Haydn’s "Creation" in Brazil. Poor, mulatto, losing his father early and being educated with great difficulty, it is not known exactly how managed to get the culture that claim to have belonged to him. Even with all this prestige, he did not escape the prejudice by the origin in a family of slaves. less
