Founded in 1951 by the late Richard S. Eaton, RES has played a leading role in Edmonton’s cultural Community for more than six decades. In addition to presenting its own Concerts, the choir is a regular guest of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and collaborates frequently with other Edmonton ensembles, including the Alberta Baroque Ensemble in this performance. It has also collaborated with other Canadian choirs in the past, including the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus, the Vancouver Bach Choir and the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir. The first movement depicts the remarkable story of the captured Africans who were reduced to slaves by European settlers in the American continent, particularly in the Caribbean. The second movement recounts the indepence of Haiti; and the third movement is about the Perseverance of the country which to this day, Haiti is fighting with fury to keep its freedom. “No human being must live on their knees; slavery in all its forms is an affront to the Divine Creator. The sense of wonder teaches us to discover all the beauty and the magnificence of the creation, and the extraordinary richness of our humanity.
