We rehearsed for most of the day in ...  moreOn 24th November 2012 we brought together 98 singers and four Choral directors for our most ambitious project to date: a Choral workshop on Thomas Tallis' monumental 40-part motet, 'Spem in Alium', composed in 1570. We rehearsed for most of the day in two-choir sections, with our four Choral directors, Scott Inglis-Kidger, Sarah Tenant-Flowers, Riccardo Bonci and Jonny Davies. After lunch we began to put the sections together. Under its dynamic and energetic conductor, Ian Allan, the choir gives two regular concerts, usually at Christmas and in the Summer, and also takes part in the Mary Wakefield Festival in Kendal. In addition, rehearsals are taken by the deputy conductor, Tracie Penwarden, who is not only one of the region's leading sopranos but a superb choir trainer to boot. With the addition of David Edmonds as their accompanist, Arnside Choral Society benefits from the expertise of three professionals, each with different specialisms. Rehearsals take place at Arnside's WI Hall in Orchard Road on Tuesdays at 7.30 and we offer a very warm welcome to anybody wishing to join us in singing a variety of styles. PG Carnivalesque" under the patronage of Prof. Krzysztof Wilde, rector of Gdańsk Tech, attracted several hundred people who listened to daring performances of popular pop music hits. During the performance we heard Choral arrangements of hits such as: "Dancing Queen", "Memory", "California Dreamin'" and "Maria". This time it was not Mozart or Bach, but ABBA, Queen and songs from the musical West Side Story that graced the walls of the Gdansk University of Technology in carnivalesque musical artistic creations. Jazz musicians performed along with the choir, and the musical effects were accompanied by a unique lighting arrangement, which required appropriate space and audience arrangement. the more-than-hour-long performance by the Academic Choir of the Gdańsk University of Technology, conducted by Prof. Mariusz Mróz and accompanied by musicians from the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz, ended with joint singing, encores and a standing ovation.  less
