Our aim was to capture a serious English Boys C...  moreAs part of the Vocal art Ensemble's "Inkspell--Choral Music Inspired by Masters of Poetry" concerts in May, 2012, this piece for treble chorus and piano by Jere Hutchinson sets e.e. cummings' whimsical poem. Our aim was to capture a serious English Boys Choir poise while making the most of the poems playful spookiness, so we elicited help from the men of the chorus to try and 'frighten' the women singing.

The piece starts a "Solstice" theme which was complemented by dance that signified the year being swallowed into darkness, emerging into new light with a coming Spring.  

The women of The Vocal art Ensemble perform Ro Agura's "Hotaru Koi" (Ho, Firefly) as part of their May 2011 concert "Cloudburst--Sounds of Nature". To set the mood, the men behind the women are providing 'firefly' effects using laser keychains.

As this piece was meant to represent the early beginnings of human civilization and the birth of language, we have staged the piece in a somewhat tribal way and added jungle sound effects.
