Fair daffodils, we weep to see
You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
Has not attained his noon.
Stay, stay, until the hasting day
Has run but to the evensong;
And, having prayed together,
we will go with you along.
We have short time to stay as you,
We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
As you or anything.
We die as your hours do, and dry away
Like to the summer’s rain;
Or as the pearls of morning’s dew,
Ne’er to be found again. less

... is wearing a red fez
... has black Eyes,
and honey lips.
Does he want to kiss me?
I’d give all the czar’s treasure for it."
This concert was the culmination of a six-week project which creates a choir from scratch for one night only. Each winter and summer, Chris Rowbury gathers a random bunch of singers from in and around Ipswich. There are no auditions and all songs are taught and learnt by ear. Usually eight songs are learnt in six two-hour sessions and in the winter are performed at St. Peters by the Waterfront, Ipswich. http://chrisrowbury.com less

This performance, however was part of the memorial service in St Martin in the Fields, for Ruth Rudge, who was a very distinguished and lovely lady, and also my first boss. The ladies of the Occasional Choir, whose beginnings were as the Madrigal Choir at West Heath, which I co-founded, all those years ago, are the singers, including one of the six that took part in the very first performance. I am conducting, and Penny Walker, who now directs the choir is accompanying. Unfortunately less than half the singers are visible in the video. less

"Show me Eyes like scars
to soothe and seethe the thoughts
thrice far and smoothly breathe
calm vision light - ajar and free,
this vision gift that's deep as dust,
and hard as feather leaves;
sweet nectar light of lust and color
brilliance;
this stroke of sight's delivery."
Program notes:
As I was searching for text for a new composition in 2019, I stumbled upon a long-time friend’s poetry book and devoured it. Emanual Wolff’s MooNlight HoWling spoke to me in its dark corners, surrealist takes on reality and visceral accounts of battles with mental illness and the struggle of existence therein. Forgiveness especially so; the first stanza of which painted an image of loss, of regret, and of reconciliation. My composition then took on a programmatic aspect – coming ... less

The angel Gabriel (the old Basque Carol) sung by Roundelay

1 The angel Gabriel from heaven came,
his wings as drifted snow, his Eyes as flame;
"All hail," said he "Thou holy maiden Mary,
most highly favoured lady." Gloria!
2 "For know, a blessed mother thou shalt be
all generations laud and honour thee,
thy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold;
most highly favoured lady."
Gloria!
3 Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head;
"To me be as it pleases God," she said.
"My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name."
Most highly favoured lady, Gloria!
4 Of her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born
In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn,
and Christian folk throughout the world will ever say,
"Most highly favoured lady, Gloria!" less

Sleep, little Eyes
That brim with childish tears amid thy play,
Be comforted! No grief of night can weigh
Against the joys that throng thy coming day.
Sleep, little heart!
There is no place in Slumberland for tears:
Life soon enough will bring its chilling fears
And sorrows that will dim the after years.
Sleep, little heart!
II
Ah, little Eyes
Dead blossoms of a springtime long ago,
That life's storm crushed and left to lie below
The benediction of the falling snow!
Sleep, little heart
That ceased so long ago its frantic beat!
The years that come and go with silent feet
Have naught to tell save this — that rest is sweet.
Sleep, little heart.

Poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)
Performed by Choir Matrix Women's Ensemble
Poem:
She is neither pink nor pale,
And she never will be all Mine;
She learned her hands in a fairy-tale,
And her mouth on a valentine.
She has more hair than she needs;
In the sun 'tis a woe to me!
And her voice is a string of colored beads,
Or steps leading into the sea.
She loves me all that she can,
And her ways to my ways resign;
But she was not made for any man,
And she never will be all Mine.
This work was commissioned and recorded remotely by Choir Matrix Women's Ensemble in March 2021, sponsored by Consonare Choral Community who holds all rights to this recording. Sound/Video Engineering by Sarah Kaufold, Artistic Director.

The choir are seated and are singing with their Eyes closed - a method frequently used during rehearsals to develop listening skills, but which produced such lovely performances that whenever we get the opportunity to perform this piece this way we do!
