The choir was founded in 1838 by Fredrik Pacius and...  moreThe Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki – Akademiska Sångföreningen or Akademen in Swedish – is a Fennoswedish (i.e. Swedish-speaking) male voice student choir based in the Finnish capital of Helsinki. The choir was founded in 1838 by Fredrik Pacius and is the oldest extant choir in Finland. At present, Akademen has around 60 active singers, most of whom are university students. However, quite a few choose to stay in the active choir long after graduation, which makes for a healthy mix of youth and experience. We give concerts regularly in Finland, and travel abroad as frequently as possible. In addition to all the Scandinavian and most European countries, Akademen has been on tour in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Singapore. We believe that ambitious musical development can go hand-in-hand with tradition, and work enthusiastically to keep alive the dialogue between past and present.  less

The Choir was started back in January 2007 by Founder Grenville Jones. Grenville stepped down at the end of 2022 as conductor and his son, Laurie Jones, has taken on the leadership role as Musical Director. The ‘Boys from Bath’ are a 60 voice auditioned choir who have entertained audiences across the UK and toured Europe and the world performing in some of the most prestigious concert venues. In 2008 the Choir achieved national acclaim when they reached the finals of a Saturday evening BBC television choir competition ‘Last Choir Standing’. The Choir sing a wide range of music from traditional, pop, gospel, musicals and secular music. It was an open invitation for men who wanted the informal experience of singing within the ranks of a Welsh Male Vocie Choir and it proved to be a huge success. Several guests turned up for the experience and were treated to the full basics of vocal production and singing within the choir by John Daniel. We have been invited by Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, UK, to sing as "choir in residence" for a week in July 2014, taking over their choir's duties of singing 8 services that week. We are the only Hawai'i choir to belong to the Royal School of Church Music, and we use their adjudication standards to award medals which are internationally recognized by the RSCM. We sing sacred music in English, Latin, and Hawaiian. We are always looking for new choristers. Auditions are year-around, although placement occurs only in fall semester and spring semester.
