The group was formed in 1976 by women who shared a common interest in the complex harmonies and compelling rhythms typical in Balkan music.
Very much in the Eastern European tradition, Nevenka includes women of all ages making music together.

A ladies' a capella four part harmony group we have our roots in barbershop but sing all sorts of music from old standards and barbershop classics to mega pop hits by groups like Abba and Queen. We perform sing outs for local groups in our area of Hampton in South West London, and take part in local fairs and festivals. From time to time we run singing courses or open evenings for which there are no auditions. On a course we usually all learn a new song together and sometimes are able not only to benefit from the direction of our musical director but also guest expert coaches from our parent organisation, the La... less

This setting for Christmas represents the cold of a Northern winter
(the cruel wind blows)
although of course the actual events took place in rather warmer climes.
It also reflects much of the liturgical and popular symbolism of the Christmas season: robins, holly etc and it brings our thoughts towards the season of Easter with the blood of Good Friday.
