The concert was the grand finale of a weekend workshop event with Gabriel Lewis-O'Connor ( Chanticleer alumnus and professional singer and choral conductor). Three choirs from Glebe Collegiate and Gabriel Lewis-O'Connor joined The Stairwell Carollers in workshops at the Galilee Centre and in concert.
Our thanks to Rachel Handley, Glebe choir director and music teacher.

Imagine a Book Club for Choral singers! Each session every two or three weeks, we will look at a couple of new songs, chosen by differend members of the group, from the whole history of music, form Monvererdi to Madness. We have two experienced conductor/singers who will be happy to lead any session, but all singers will be encouraged to lead their own song choices if they wish.
The aim, in the first intance, is to have fun exploring as much choral repertoire as possible, in a fun and collaborative enviroment. We do not intend to book up concerts straight away - once we've had a few meetings and looked at enough repertoire then we'll think about performances. Let's work to get the music right first!

It commits to significantly contribute to the nurturance of the country’s choral tradition. Its vision is to become the country's premiere all-male chorale, exemplifying the best of the Filipino: excellence, discipline and a flair for entertainment.
Inspired by the global spirit and nationalistic dedication of the great ilustrado men during Spanish colonial times, the choir is slowly building a repertoire that includes the best of local and global all-male choral music.
A member of the Madz et al network of choirs, it is composed of men who had extensive choral singing backgrounds through their college, church and community/parish choir experiences.
Koro Ilustrado's choirmasters are Edmund Alan "Jong" Piquero and Anna Tabita Abeleda-Piquero. less

Gowned as a bride thou art
Caught with the glow,
Giving with ruddy heart
Blood to the snow.
Thou has come in to make
Dreams to the boy,
Lightly the girl will take
Omens of joy.
Thou hast the taste of all
Sweethearts in Spring,
Thou hast come out to call
Colours to sing.
Low rides the sun above,
Meek as the moon:
Thou art as moist in love
As a love tune.
Still as a bride thou art
In a bride's gown:
See! an uplifted heart
Beats in a clown.

People that I meet and pass
In the city's broken roar,
Faces that I lose so soon
and have never found before,
Do you know how much you tell
In the meeting of our eyes,
How ashamed I am, and sad
To have pierced your poor disguise?
Secrets rushing without sound
Crying from your hiding places —
Let me go, I cannot bear
The sorrow of the passing faces.
— People in the restless street,
Can it be, oh can it be
In the meeting of our eyes
That you know as much of me? less

"Where then could pain find a hold?" is a musical plea for reconciliation addressed to those (individuals, groups, nations) who find themselves in conflict.
I would like to acknowledge pianist Fred Hersch whose magical playing of Billy Joel's "and so it goes" in the middle of an Ottawa winter inspired me to start working on this piece.
I would like to thank my Ottawa singing friends in the "Ad hoc Chorale" for testing out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offering valuable comments.
I would also like to acknowledge the a cappella choir that I sing in, The Stairwell Carollers, and our director Pierre Massie, for their musical inspiration these past 27 years.
and with deepest appreciation to my brother Adam Rain and my friend Geneviève Lajoie for their invaluable support throughout my composing journey.
