"Where then could pain find a hold?" is a musical plea for reconciliation addressed to those (individuals, groups, nations) who find themselves in conflict. I would like to acknowledge pianist Fred Hersch whose magical playing of Billy Joel's "And so it goes" in the middle of an Ottawa winter inspired me to start working on this piece. I would like to thank my Ottawa singing friends in the "Ad hoc Chorale" for testing out this piece in One of our informal workshops and offering valuable comments. I would also like to acknowledge the a cappella choir that I sing in, The Stairwell Carollers, and our director Pierre Massie, for their musical inspiration these past 27 years. And with deepest appreciation to my brother Adam Rain and my friend Geneviève Lajoie for their invaluable support throughout my composing journey. NB: choirs interested in obtaining copies of the score can conta... One';">less

It is a medley of three 19th century Songs—"Dixie", a minstrel Song that became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy since the Civil War; "All My Trials", originally a Bahamian lullaby, but closely related to African American spirituals, and well-known through folk music revivalists. Sung as part of a concert at St. Johns Church, Keynsham, on 6th April 2013 to raise funds for Motor NeurOne Disease Association. One';">less

Today it comprises 23 selected singers, Cantilena meaning "lightweight Song", deriving from the Latin word for "Song" or "melody". Whenever possible, during concerts the members of the choir wear a pearl necklace to represent the significance of the activities pursued: each member of the choir is represented by One of the pearls, with the strand linking them all being the music - the main purpose of so much hard work to achieve artistic quality. As well as being an extremely feminine accessory, it also illustrates the quality, refinement, finish and musical beauty that the Academia Concerto pursues. The formation of groups of like voices in Brazil is not very common and, therefore, requires constant research to seek out specialised repertoire, both in Brazil and abroad, making appropriate arrangements or adaptations of pieces for ... As a boy chorister I can remember singing Healey Willan's setting of "Rise up, my love", a true gem. The beautiful imagery of this text drew me to write my own setting. Sincere thanks to Matthew Curtis (choraltracks.com) for recording "Rise up, my love, my fair One." If you would like to obtain the sheet music for this Song, please contact: info@leadingnote.com. Individual Song parts recorded by the choristers using their own equipment following lead videos made by our Director, Pierre. Pierre then put together the video using Final Cut Pro. A message from the Director: "Christmas 2020 is the first in our 43-year history where we haven’t been able to stage live concerts, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still sing. So, after planning, rehearsing and recording, we are proud to present "What Child is This?" - One selection from our Virtual Christmas Concert of 6 carols. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nstkQZ9-5Gs We hope you will enjoy our renditions of old favourites, some in new settings by our director, along with a few lesser known pieces from our carol archives. I cannot be more proud of my musical colleagues for forging through the complex logistics of putting these videos together. I thank them for their loyalty to our fans and their fellow c...
