We rehearsed for most of the day in ...  moreOn 24th November 2012 we brought together 98 singers and four choral directors for our most ambitious project to date: a choral workshop on Thomas Tallis' monumental 40-part Motet, 'Spem in Alium', composed in 1570. We rehearsed for most of the day in two-choir sections, with our four choral directors, Scott Inglis-Kidger, Sarah Tenant-Flowers, Riccardo Bonci and Jonny Davies. After lunch we began to put the sections together. At 4pm we brought all 8 choirs together and Scott Inglis-Kidger led a most thrilling final performance. We are a newly formed ensemble of women's voices from Canterbury in Kent. Our repertoire ranges from classical Motet to jazz and female barbershop. We perform on a regular basis across Kent and have on going partnership links with choirs in the UK and France.

Owing much to the polyphonic work of the Renaissance, the Motet is a deeply-felt work written during Wesley's period of recuperation from a fall whilst out fishing in the North Yorkshire countryside at Helmsley. The chromatic clashes at the words "the bones which Thou hast broken" are almost certainly reflective of the pain the composer had suffered, for his leg was badly broken and he walked ever after with a noticeable limp. This performance was recorded in Leeds Minster on Sunday 28th April 2013 during the recital of 'Music with Minster connections' sung by St Peter's Singers of Leeds, directed by Dr Simon Lindley. Leeds Minster, formerly Leeds Parish Church, has a long and distinguished musical history. The list of organists and past organists of the Parish Church of St Peter-at-Leeds is outstanding.
