The familiar African American song, “Angels watching over me” is given cantus firmus treatment while a lilting African lullaby, "Abiyoyo" gently sways around it. The Bantu song, "Abiyoyo" is traditionally sung at bedtime as a song to entrance night time monsters into a dancing state; mother and father can then chase the monsters away so baby can safely sleep. In mid-April, 2011, Ola spent 3 days on the Ce...  moreComposer/pianist Ola Gjeilo joins the CWU Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director) in presenting Gjeilo's "The Ground" - featuring the the CWU string faculty members who comprise the Kairos String Quartet. In mid-April, 2011, Ola spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus for a project in which he joined the Choir in recording 3 of his compositions. On this video, Gjeilo accompanies the Choir on "The Ground" He is playing a written accompaniment on this video. He created an improvised accompaniment on the other two videos of this series. One is on his setting of the "Ubi Caritas" text and the other is on his composition, "Northern Lights", Because of his view that improvising is a wonderful snapshot of artists "at that moment", the project was entitled "In the Moment". We are based in Oxford and many of our younger Singers have gone on to sing professionally in London. We sing a wide range of classical repertoire, from Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works, many written by John Duggan. We have recorded two discs for The Gift of Music and give concerts in Oxford and London, as well as making regular trips to France and Italy.
