The Choir has built an international reputation and has made it a trademark to include newly written music in its programmes. This is thanks to The work of Knut Nystedt (b. 1915), organist, composer and conductor, who returned to Norway in 1964 after studying in The USA and started a Choir at The music department of The University of Oslo. The Choir continues to recruit members from The department of music, as well as from The Norwegian Academy of Music in more recent years. The American Choral tradition in which Nystedt was trained emphasises The importance of new music – a practice Nystedt brought back with him to Oslo. Knut Nystedt’s music became a vital element of Schola Cantorum’s repertoire. Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl became conductor in 2002, and has furTher established The Choir’s firm position in Norway’s musical life. She has continued Nystedt’s tradition of performing modern music. During The fifty plus years of its lifetime it has benefited from The leadership of five furTher conductors, David Griffiths, Margaret Maddock, Len Williams, Carol Davies and our present Director of Music, Alwyn Evans. The Choir has travelled widely over The years with tours in Europe, United States and Canada besides engagements throughout Wales and England. Our Concert venues have varied from village halls to national auditoria and great caThedrals. In The Eisteddfod field we have won two National first prizes plus several seconds and oThers.
