The text is based upon excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank, taken from the 1952 and 1991 English translations of the book. The full musical work was premiered in 2004 by the San Francisco Girls Chorus. Anne Frank was between the ages of 13 and 15 when she wrote her Diary, while living in a secret upstairs annex over a warehouse in Amsterdam with her family, the Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer. Despite the fears and frustrations she experienced in over two years of hiding from the Nazis, Anne learned how to survive, even to find beauty in small things and to hold on to her ideals. Composer Linda Tutas Haugen writes: "My goals for this composition are to honor the life of Anne Frank and to gain a deeper understanding of what she, her family, and friends experienced during the Holocaust." The text excerpts are chronologically arranged, and span more than two years. They portray...    less

Every day I think of her because she was a great angel in My career. She opened the doors to Europe for me and helped me a lot to Grow My career. She was also the musical godmother of hundreds of people to whom with Epilogi she gave education and showed them a passion. She organized festivals that boosted the culture of choral music in Europe and also did everything with unparalleled energy and joy. She was a woman who inspired me, who inspired us and was a great friend in My life. Thank you Angelina. Santiago Veros  less

But quick-eyed Love, observing me Grow slack From My first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning If I lack’d anything. ‘A guest,’ I answer’d, ‘worthy to be here:’ Love said, ‘You shall be he.’ ‘I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, My dear, I cannot look on Thee.’ Love took My hand and smiling did reply, ‘Who made the eyes but I?’ ‘Truth, Lord; but I have marr’d them: Let My shame Go where it doth deserve.’ ‘And know you not,’ says Love, ‘Who bore the blame?’ ‘My dear, then I will serve.’ ‘You must sit down,’ says Love, ‘and taste My meat.’ So I did sit and eat.Love bade me welcome performed by Roundelay in Chester Love bade me welcome; yet My soul drew back, Guilty of dust and sin. Two points of note: First, the composition grew out of the feeling that all 4 voices should start on the same note, Grow outwards and then come back to that same note at the end. The rest just seemed to evolve on its own, seemingly guided by some external force. Second, unusually, I have asked choirs (where possible) to sing this without any breaks, via staggered breathing, as I wanted to highlight the deep conviction underlying the words of the Psalm, as one single thread of deep belief that moves from beginning to end. Sincere thanks to Matthew Curtis (choraltracks.com) for recording "Psalm 23." As always, comments are welcomed. Email me at rain@magma.ca, if you'd like more info. I would like to acknowledge the a cappella choir that I sing in, The Stairwell Carollers, and our director Pierre Massie, for their musical inspiration these past 26 years. I would also like to thank My friends in our "Ad ...    less
