Tread lightly, she is near
Under the snow,
Speak gently, she can hear
The daisies grow.
All her bright golden hair
Tarnished with rust,
She that was young and fair
Fallen to dust.
Lily-like, white as snow,
She hardly knew
She was a woman, so
Sweetly she grew.
Coffin-board, heavy stone,
Lie on her breast,
I vex my heart alone,
She is at rest.
Peace, peace, she cannot hear
Lyre or sonnet,
All my life's buried here,
Heap earth upon it. less

Born in Munich in 1897, Ben-Haim had a very impressive career as a pianist, conductor and composer. He moved to Tel-Aviv in 1933, and soon became a leading figure in the musical life of Palestine and the State of Israel (from 1948). Ben-Haim regarded his work as part of a wide-spread effort to synthesize Eastern and Western traditions.

The roses bloom in the month of May,
But my soul's full of gloom suffering in love.
The nightingales sing and are sighing in love,
The passion will kill me, multiply my pain.
Come faster, oh dove, come faster to me,
Come faster, my soul, because I shall die.
