Founded in September 2000 by a group of friends from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the Choir comprises mainly of recent graduates and current students of Durham University, but also welcomes singers from all over the North East, and includes ...  moreFounded in September 2000 by a group of friends from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, the Choir comprises mainly of recent graduates and current students of Durham University, but also welcomes singers from all over the North East, and includes many of the region’s teachers. In May, the Choir travelled to Italy to take part in the “Venezia in Musica” International Choral Competition. They won first prize in the secular music category, came runners up in the sacred music category, and received the “Outstanding Performance” prize for Bogorditsye Dyevo by Rachmaninov. They have been awarded “Choir of the Day” at all five BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year regional rounds they have entered, and in 2008 reached the adult category finals in the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, alongside the six other best adult Choirs in the country. The repertoire of Mundus Cantat, a mixed chamber Choir, includes various kinds of music – old melodies, modern songs as well as sacral music and popular music. Its members have participated in many major music events, such as oratorio performances dedicated to Pope John Paul II or a concert directed by Enio Morricone during the Solidarity Festival. Housed in the Faculty of Engineering, members are composed of students from the different Engineering and Computer Departments. Started out as a small group of young Engineering students in 1976, the group now is currently the UST-Engineering's pride. Under the baton of Mr. Ronald Raz, the chorale has been able to earn places in the annual University Competitions. Even until now, the group has been maintaining a position in the top college Choirs of the University. The chorale is not only known for their repertoire ranging from sacred music to mellow pop, they are also known for their acapella renditions of up beat pop music. They are also engaged in rendering their music not only to the school community but also in other events that may be requested.  less
